In 2016, a year after the 50th entry in the long-running DJ-Kicks series, the iconic Detroit artist, DJ and producer Moodymann stepped up to helm the next landmark edition — his first ever multi-artist DJ mix compilation.
He doesn’t carry his name without reason: Moodymann does exactly what his mood dictates. As a result, Kenny Dixon Jr. has earned a reputation for being a difficult artist. When mixing the 52nd edition of the DJ-Kicks series, however, the Detroit legend was clearly in good spirits.
A look at the tracklist quickly reveals a surprisingly restrained and accessible Moodymann — an impression that only deepens while listening. Across the roughly 75-minute mix, which incidentally marks his first ever commercial DJ mix compilation, he leans stylistically toward the likes of Theo Parrish, Omar S and Flying Lotus. Featuring tracks by Nightmares On Wax, Fort Knox Five, Kings Of Tomorrow, Anne Clark and Lady Alma, the focus lies on Detroit, House, Hip-Hop and Soul.
In other words, Moodymann centers the mix on soulfulness, depth and rich grooves — on the essentials. As expected, the tempo subtly increases toward the end, gradually taking on a more pronounced dancefloor character. Eleven of the 30 tracks are exclusive Moodymann edits, including reworks of pieces by Kings Of Tomorrow and Daniel Bortz.
Following !K7’s 40th anniversary, this classic DJ-Kicks mix is now being repressed on coke bottle clear vinyl.
The release comes as a 3LP gatefold edition and includes a limited DJ-Kicks playing card.
